The definition of a “Pell Grant” is money that the federal government will grant students that need it in order to pay for college. The only restriction is that the students able for this grant have not earned their first bachelor’s degree or are not enrolled in certain post-baccalaureate programs. The amount of Pell Grants for College depend on your financial need, costs to attend school, status as a student (whether full-time or part-time) and their plans to attend school for a full academic year or less. Unlike loans, Pell Grants for College do not have to be repaid, and can potentially be granted by completing the FAFSA application. An interesting fact about Pell Grants for College is that since September 11, 2001, the maximum amount of grants are rewarded to any eligible student whose parent or guardian died in a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan. Students may be eligible to receive Pell Grants for College twice every year (one each semester).
If you are eligible for Pell Grants for College your school can use them for many things, I.e. apply them to school costs, pay directly by check to you, or a combination of both. The school is obligated to tell you, in writing, how much you’re awarded and how/when you’ll be paid the grant. To learn more about this and other student aids, visit StudentAid.Ed.Gov.
