Scholarships for Hispanics are very much available. In fact, Hispanics aiming for a college education have wider options compared to non-minority students. In a way, a college education can be treated as an asset. It can open up doors to better opportunities. Unfortunately, there is a large rate of dropouts from the Hispanic population. Financial difficulties are possible reasons. But there is a good solution—you can apply for scholarships for Hispanics.

The Hispanic College Fund aims to uplift the plight of the young Hispanic population by providing funding resources for college and by giving the proper education guidance. Currently, the HCF offers four major scholarship programs. Through these scholarship programs, they were able to sponsor the college education of 592 students in 2009.

If you want to apply for any of the HCF scholarship program, you have to be a Hispanic that has attended any U.S. high school for at least 3 years. Your GPA should reach a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Also, you must be, or plan to be, a full-time undergraduate in a university or college.

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is one of the most recognized and biggest scholarship-giving bodies in the United States. Even the industry giants (McDonalds, Wal-Mart, and Procter) give their full support to the HSF. Aside from scholarships, the HSF also orients young Hispanics about their different options for educational programs.

The HSF/Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Scholarship is reserved for undergraduate and graduate Hispanic students who are currently enrolled in a four-year college or master’s degree. The award money for school amounts to $2,500. Aside from the conventional requirements, an applicant should also file a request for federal financial aid by submitting the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Aid).

You can also take advantage of the 396 federal education grants and student loans offered by the government. Each program has its specific terms and requirements, so you should make it a point to read more about them from the federal online application site. And don’t forget to file the FAFSA to qualify.

Sometimes, it is really much better if you personally visit the colleges and universities in your area. In that way, you’ll be made more aware of your options. If you don’t fit into any of the scholarship qualifications, you can also try seeking employment at the college in exchange for a waivered tuition.

Securing a scholarship award can be daunting. That is why, as much as possible, you should start preparing for it at an early stage, like while you’re still in high school. Doing well in your academic studies could really put you in a better position for bagging scholarships for Hispanics.
